Cruise Ships coming to Larnaca

Cruise ships will soon be on the way carrying 4,000 passengers plus crew, who will be disembarking at Larnaca’s marina and spending the day in the town. This means restaurants, shops and local venues will be inundated with customers who will need to be fed, entertained and provided for. The town’s turnover will be transformed, both financially and physically. Entertainment will be organized by the Municipality at Larnaca’s fort.

Grant Holmes, of progress Cyprus Tourism and Business Services was quoted as saying: “The implications are huge. The average spend of each passenger is €85 a day. This is going to generate a huge amount of money for the businesses in Larnaca”. Holmes explained that most of these holiday-makers use cruising to get a feel of where to spend future, longer holidays. Tourism for Larnaca will be transformed. The cruise port will have the capacity for seven ships at a time. This all links in with the plans for the transformation of the marina. Alexis Michaelides, Deputy Mayor, has been quoted as saying: “The new marina will take the berths from 60 to 1500 and there will be a cruising centre.

With a new airport, marina and cruise-ship port, new hotels in the town, pedestrianised squares, a new seafront extending beyond the Fort along Piale Pasha Street and the redevelopment of Dhekelia Road’s refinery area, Larnaca is cruising to a bright and prosperous future.

At the largest-Ermou Square there will be new street lighting and statues. The contractors, lacovou Brothers, assure us at no stage will there be any traffic blockages. It will all be competed within 18 months, with phase one (Castle Square) finished first. Construction of the new airport is running on time and will be finished in 12-14 months. Piale Pasha Street is in final stages of planning.” Lefteri Embedokli, Chief executive of Larnaca Municipality is quoted as saying: “We don’t plan to widen the road there, but will demolish restaurants on the water-side like Monte Carlo and Varoshiotis, and we will do something about the parking along that road.” There will be a bicycle lane, pedestrianised area and hopefully less traffic systems which will be put into place. The parking centers in the town centre will be offered to private tender “but we don’t want to attract more cars into the area,” added Embedokli.
